In the Word: God is My Shield

Welcome to Hope Mommies’ In the Word devotionals. Over the next several weeks, we will be studying Psalm 18:1-2 together. Psalm 18 was penned by David after God had delivered Him from the hands of his enemies, and is rich with metaphors describing the nature and character of God. In this series, we will be looking at how each of these attributes affords us a greater picture of God’s care for His children, and how knowing and believing these truths can bring comfort to our hearts in the midst of grief. As we study together, we encourage ...

He Gives Strength to the Weary

Confession time—the Bible I use is still my Student Bible from high school. I’m three years shy of forty, and I still haven’t graduated to the adult Bible. But don’t worry. It’s in great shape because of my nifty Bible ...

Anna’s Story

“Do you have kids?” The days when that was a “simple” question to answer seem so long ago. “No, no kids yet,” was the easy answer right after my husband, Brendan, and I got married. “Not yet, but hopefully soon,” was the anxious but hopeful answer while we were waiting for God to bless us with a child. “Our first is on the way,” was the answer full of excitement and dreams coming true once we finally found out that we were expecting. Now, that question holds more emotion than I ever knew possible. “Yes, I have one precious daughter… she was born ...

My eyes opened slowly as the nurse touched my arm to wake me. She smiled. “I’m so glad you slept well. I didn’t see the need to wake you,” she tenderly stated. I had slept solid all night, which was ...

God’s Faithfulness Endures Forever

“Praise the Lord, all nations! Extol Him, all peoples! For great is His steadfast love toward us, and the faithfulness of the Lord endures forever. Praise the Lord!” Psalm 117 I have been asked how I can proclaim God’s faithfulness after experiencing the loss of a child. I ask, “How can I not?” I grew up singing the words from a hymn, “Great is Thy faithfulness... Morning by morning new mercies I see. All I have needed Thy hands have provided. Great is Thy faithfulness Lord unto me.” Having these words etched in my heart helped me when I hit my faith-...

God is Faithful in the Yearning

Written in bold letters next to Psalm 42 in my Bible is the word yearning. What a powerful word of desperation and neediness! I wrote that word during the first year of trying for a baby, because I would often cling to that Psalm for comfort. I related to the Psalmist’s sorrow being so powerful that it clouded his memory of the Lord. He felt forgotten, and I did too each time another announcement of a friend’s pregnancy surfaced. I memorized verse 11: “Why are you cast down, O my soul? And why are you disquieted within me? Hope in God; For I shall yet praise ...
