{We Can't Grieve However We Want}// "Subsequent ultrasounds, however, showed that our boys had congenital birth defects. When they were born with crooked joints and extreme muscle weakness, they were immediately intubated. In an instant, a thousand dreams of fatherhood died. Instead of the life we hoped for, we ...
God’s Faithfulness Endures Forever
“Praise the Lord, all nations! Extol Him, all peoples!
For great is His steadfast love toward us, and the faithfulness of
the Lord endures forever. Praise the Lord!”
Psalm 117
I have been asked how I can proclaim God’s faithfulness after experiencing the loss of a child. I ask, “How can I not?”
I grew up singing the words from a hymn, “Great is Thy faithfulness... Morning by morning new mercies I see. All I have needed Thy hands have provided. Great is Thy faithfulness Lord unto me.”
Having these words etched in my heart helped me when I hit my faith-...
A Song for My Soul: Weep With Me
Music has the ability to speak into the deepest recesses of our hearts. God often uses songs to speak hope and encouragement to our souls. In this series, Hope Moms share songs that have pointed them to the hope of Christ in the midst of their grief. Is there a song that has comforted you in your grief? We'd love to have you share your story here.
During a particularly large chasm of grief after our loss of Anna, I simply wanted to be sad and cry over her daily. Although these times were exhausting and time consuming, I hated avoiding it because that is when I felt ...
God is Faithful in the Yearning
Written in bold letters next to Psalm 42 in my Bible is the word yearning. What a powerful word of desperation and neediness! I wrote that word during the first year of trying for a baby, because I would often cling to that Psalm for comfort. I related to the Psalmist’s sorrow being so powerful that it clouded his memory of the Lord. He felt forgotten, and I did too each time another announcement of a friend’s pregnancy surfaced.
I memorized verse 11: “Why are you cast down, O my soul? And why are you disquieted within me? Hope in God; For I shall yet praise ...
In the Word: God is My Deliverer
Welcome to Hope Mommies’ In the Word devotionals. Over the next several weeks, we will be studying Psalm 18:1-2 together. Psalm 18 was penned by David after God had delivered Him from the hands of his enemies, and is rich with metaphors describing the nature and character of God. In this series, we will be looking at how each of these attributes affords us a greater picture of God’s care for His children, and how knowing and believing these truths can bring comfort to our hearts in the midst of grief. As we study together, we encourage you to use the comments as a ...
God is Faithful in the Waiting
“The Lord of hosts will prepare a lavish banquet for all peoples on this mountain;
A banquet of aged wine, choice pieces with marrow,
And refined, aged wine.
And on this mountain He will swallow up the covering which is over all peoples,
Even the veil which is stretched over all nations.
He will swallow up death for all time,
And the Lord God will wipe tears away from all faces,
And He will remove the reproach of His people from all the earth;
For the Lord has spoken.
And it will be said in that day,
“Behold, this is our God for whom we ...
Together Before the Throne
It was early in the afternoon on a Friday in January. I was sitting in the waiting room at the doctor’s office waiting for a quick ultrasound of the precious babe I was carrying. At my previous appointment I had measured a few weeks ahead of schedule, so my midwife wanted to verify that the due date I had been given was accurate. I didn’t mind at all. I would always welcome another opportunity to see this tiny child of mine.
But as soon as I was called back and my baby appeared on the monitor, everything changed. My dreams for the future vanished beneath the deafening ...

God is Faithful in the “Yes”
I have grieved the loss of my daughter because I love her. And at times, this has tempted me to believe that my grief and love are coextensive. But actually, my love for my daughter goes far beyond my grief.
The Freedom to Grieve or Not Grieve
As the intensity and frequency of my grief experiences have lessened, love has continued to persist. In love, I am set on my daughter’s good—and because of heavenly glory, I have the unshakeable hope she already has all good. Remaining here, because I do not equate grief and love, I now have no conflict of love when experie...
