In the Word: God is My Deliverer

Welcome to Hope Mommies’ In the Word devotionals. Over the next several weeks, we will be studying Psalm 18:1-2 together. Psalm 18 was penned by David after God had delivered Him from the hands of his enemies, and is rich with metaphors describing the nature and character of God. In this series, we will be looking at how each of these attributes affords us a greater picture of God’s care for His children, and how knowing and believing these truths can bring comfort to our hearts in the midst of grief. As we study together, we encourage you to use the comments as a place to dialogue with us about what you are learning and share your answers to the questions below. We pray that you hearts will be encouraged as you study these names of God along with us! 

GOD IS MY DELIVERER

“I love you, O Lord, my strength. The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer, my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.”
Psalm 18:1-2

READ:
After losing my daughter, it felt as if I had sunk into a deep, dark hole. The sun had dimmed, and I didn’t see a way out of my consuming sorrow. I had asked God to deliver Kinley, to heal her, and to save her life. But He didn’t…or so I thought.
Over time, I realized that God did deliver Kinley. It was just in a different location than I had asked for or anticipated. He didn’t deliver her home to our house, but He delivered her Home to eternity with Him. God healed and saved Kinley, just not for earth.
Through this realization, I also discovered that God had delivered me too. He delivered me out of despair and into hope. God rescued me from overwhelming grief into gratitude of His love for me and for my daughter. God’s Word came alive for me in a way it never had before losing Kinley. David expresses it perfectly in Psalm 40:2—
“He lifted me out of the pit of despair, out of the mud and the mire. He set my feet on solid ground and steadied me as I walked along.”
From my deep, dark hole to walking in truth—that’s what God did for me and what He wants to do for you too! I know how bad it hurts to lose a child. Perhaps grief has shaken your faith too. But seek Him, sweet sister. Read God’s Word that He has prepared in advance to minister to your heart. There is truth and healing there. God will rescue you from your pit and deliver you from darkness.

Read all of Psalm 40. Which verses stand out to you? Write out a prayer of praise for what God has done in your life and a petition of what you desire Him to accomplish in your heart.

    I am so very sorry for the loss of your sweet child. We lost our 9 yr. old daughter in 1986 and it devastated me for a very long time. It was a long hard fight on my part to find my way back to God, but he DELIVERED me from the pits of my grief and has since blessed me in many ways.
