Drawing Near on Mother’s Day

May 8, 2011. My first Mother’s Day as a Hope Mom. I had survived my birthday, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Valentines without Gwendolyn. And “survival” is an appropriate word—these first holidays were what I call the “little deaths”; the barely-holding-back-sobs (or escaping to another room) to let out all the sadness that can’t help but be expended through tears. But Mother’s Day loomed so large, obscuring the rest of what is typically a lovely month out of the year. Thinking of all I had stored up in hope for Mother’s Day—homemade cards, sticky sweet kisses, coffee in bed, children earnestly doing ...

Why Are We “Hope Mommies”?

In October of 2010 Blair and Erin Cushman, while in labor with their first child, lost the heartbeat of their daughter Gwendolyn and were rushed in for an emergency c-section. Gwendolyn was revived and lived in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit for 36 hours before passing away. While in the hospital and following Gwendolyn’s death, Erin and Blair were overwhelmed with love by a community of friends and strangers who were informed of their loss. Many were praying, sending emails, texts, and messages via Facebook, sent financial assistance, provided meals, cleaned the house, and set up memorial funds, thereby providing emotional, spiritual, and ...

The Hope of the Resurrection

"One day, there will be a great reversal of everything we're doing right now." Pastor Chris said those words at Gwendolyn's graveside service, and it's honestly all that I can remember from his eulogy. It's all that I think of when I go by her grave, and whisper over her body - "One day, Gwenny! One day this will all be undone." I love Easter. I love it more fully now because it is one day in our calendar year that the majority of our nation sets aside, whether they know it or not, to give glory to Christ's resurrection. Now I know that you can argue with me that Easter has pagan roots, or is now so commercialized that everyone just sees ...

Erin’s Story

Suspended by, Erin Cushman Hope Mom to Gwendolyn Hope It’s been over five years since my daughter’s birth and death. Five years – it is true that time can be an agent of healing. Time can so accustom your heart and mind to a despicable reality that you can say it without blinking, without feeling the weight of your words: “It’s been over five years since my daughter’s birth and death.” And while I am in the habit of telling my story, especially as I explain the ministry that was birthed from it all, I can never meet the eyes of strangers as I relate the brevity and reality of my firstborn. Something inherent – the ...

12 Days of Christmas {Remembering Your Baby}

"As a Hope Mom or Dad, the first round of holidays is always the worst. Their absence is tangible to you, and you wonder how you can eat and be merry while your heart is bleeding out. It's always difficult to know how to honor your baby in the holiday season - do you put up a stocking? Do you take a family photo -- with our without a special item or photograph of them? Do you talk about him or her? My story is by no means the "ideal" -- all grief journeys are unique, just as each Hope Baby and family are unique.  But I want to share what my husband and I do to honor our Gwenny in special ways during this season: 1) Pumpkins are a visible ...
