In the Word: Where Hope Starts

Welcome to Hope Mommies’ In the Word devotionals. It is our desire that this series will aid you in getting in the Bible for yourself and discovering the joy that comes from hearing from God through the pages of His Word.

“According to the foreknowledge of God the Father, in the sanctification of the Spirit, for obedience to Jesus Christ and for sprinkling with His blood: May grace and peace be multiplied to you.” 1 Peter 1:2

READ:

While walking through this valley of grief and loss, the prospect of grace and peace multiplying in your life may seem completely far-fetched or out of reach. But let me—rather, let God’s Word— assure you that it isn’t. Grace and peace are yours abundantly in Christ Jesus, dear one.

“Sanctification,” “obedience,” and “sprinkling with His blood” –each can represent both initial salvation from our sin and our daily cleansing (“sprinkling”) from sin by which we grow. Our current standing before Christ being emphasized three times at the beginning of this epistle brings us to the conclusion that it must all begin here, with matters of salvation. The themes we’ll see later—the hope of v. 3, the inheritance of v. 4, the joy of vv. 8-9, and the list goes on—are solely accessed by those who belong to Christ.

For what would we want of His hope, inheritance, and joy if we have not first loved the One upon whom it is all based? Thankfully, the crux of it all is not on our effort of faith—it is all based on the lovely sovereignty of God (“according to the foreknowledge of God the Father”). Do you want to give yourself to Him for the first time, or do you want your hearts’ love for Him renewed? Repent of your sin and believe in Jesus Christ. He will lovingly hear us and He will powerfully secure us to Himself! And what follows? Grace and peace multiplied to you.

RELFECT:

•How does your love for Christ draw you towards obedience to Him?

•Read Romans 8:29. What does this teach us about the foreknowledge of God?

•In what ways would you like to see your love for the Lord renewed?
