In the Word: God is Holy
Welcome to Hope Mommies’ In the Word devotionals. Over the next several weeks, we will be looking at different characteristics of God—specifically reflecting on how each aspect of His character offers us hope in the midst of our grief. As we study together, we encourage you to use the comments as a place to dialogue with us about what you are learning and share your answers to the questions below. We pray that you hearts will be encouraged as you dig into the infinitely beautiful character of God along with us!
“For thus says the One who is high and lifted up, who inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy: ‘I dwell in the high and holy place, and also with him who is of a contrite and lowly spirit, to revive the spirit of the lowly, and to revive the heart of the contrite.’”
Isaiah 57:15
READ:
When we say that God is holy we are referring to His inexhaustible greatness and His unblemished character. God cannot be charged with wrong, because He cannot be wrong. His very nature does not allow it. He is completely set apart from His creation. There is no one and nothing like Him.
But for all His greatness, our God chooses not only to dwell in His high and holy place, but also with us in order to revive and cleanse our hearts. He longs to transform us, to make us holy and set apart just as He is. But this change and restoration can only take place in our hearts when we choose to recognize the majesty of God’s holiness.
Often this process will be painful and difficult. Just as the sculptor uses sharp tools to carve his masterpiece, the Lord can use your grief to carve you and shape you into His image. And while it may be painful, even excruciating for a time, as you turn to Him in humility the outcome will be marvelous as His pure light begins to shine through you.
REFLECT:
1. How can you be set apart, even in your sorrow to best reflect and honor God’s holiness?
2. How does the knowledge that God cannot be wrong in His plans for you inform your grief?
JOURNAL:
Write a prayer to God praising Him for His holiness and asking Him to work through your grief in order to set you apart for His glory.
