Our Infinite God
God has invited us to be captivated by the greatness of His character and what we believe about God has the greatest potential to shape our suffering. Although we will never be able to thoroughly grasp the fullness of His glory on this side of eternity, He has given us glimpses of His glory in the revelation of His Word. In this series, we will dive into ten attributes of God and discover what hope they offer us in our sorrow and how knowing and believing these truths about who God is can provide great comfort in the midst of grief.
As a sinful person, I am blown away as I read throughout Scripture about how great our God is. We will never fully understand everything about God, but His Word does not leave us in the dark. He wants us to know Him, and His Word tells us so much about Him. Psalm 145: 3 says, “Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised, and His greatness is unsearchable.” This means that there will always be more for us to discover and learn about our great God. What a joy!
When we lost our daughter, Lydia Alice, there were so many nights I cried out to the Lord. I would question why He took our daughter. I wondered why this happened to our family. I wondered so many things. I am sure that you also have your own set of questions that your heart is longing to have answered. I do not have any answers for your heart, nor do I have them for my own. What I hope, however, is that your soul will be filled with peace (as mine has) in understanding that we will never fully comprehend the Lord or His ways because He is infinite and beyond our comprehension.
“But who are you, O man, to answer back to God? Will what is molded say to its molder, ‘Why have you made me like this?’ Has the potter no right over the clay, to make out of the same lump one vessel for honorable use and another for dishonorable use? What if God, desiring to show His wrath and to make known His power, has endured with much patience vessels of wrath prepared for destruction, in order to make known the riches of His glory for vessels of mercy, which He has prepared beforehand for glory”
Romans 9:20-23
These verses in Romans have much to teach us about God as our creator. As the creation, we do not understand the intentions or purposes of our Maker. There are some things that are simply not for us to know. And while there is much that we cannot know, what we do know is that God has taken great care to make us.
Psalm 139: 13-16 says: “For You formed my inward parts; You knitted me together in my mother’s womb. I praise You for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are Your works; my soul knows it very well. My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in Your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them.”
As I have meditated on these verses, my soul has been comforted to know that God, in His infinite abilities, wisdom, and power, created me. He also created my daughter. He knew the number of Lydia’s days before He created her, and yet, He still took great care to form her. He knew the number of your child’s days, and He took great care to form him or her. I have peace in knowing that we matter to God.
Another thing that we can know is that God can be trusted because He is good and faithful! Psalm 145 tells us in verses 17-18 that, “The Lord is righteous in all His ways and kind in all His works. The Lord is near to all who call on Him, to all who call on Him in truth.” As a Hope Mom, I know that those words can be hard to sit with because it does not feel kind that our babies are no longer with us. But, that is where we must circle back to understanding that we cannot know everything. We must continue in faith, believing that God is who He says He is. We must trust, even when it is hard, that the Lord is kind in all His works. That He is good.
And in writing these words, I am once again encouraged because I feel it would be unbearable to know all the answers to my questions. But to just reflect and know that the Lord’s purposes are greater than my understanding gives me comfort, because I know that somehow these trials are being used for my good and His glory.
Wherever you are in your grief, it is my prayer that the Lord will meet you where you are. I pray that if your heart is questioning, that you would call on the Lord and fill your heart with the truths found throughout Scripture. I know that in doing this, the Lord will draw near because He says He will. “The Lord is near to all who call on Him, to all who call on Him in truth.” Psalm 145:18.
