One Month until October 15
We are one month away from October 15, the day set aside for National Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Day. It’s a day to remember, to come together, and to hope in the Word.
I filled some of the first weeks after my daughter went to heaven with hours upon hours of scouring the internet in the hope of finding someone, anyone, who was feeling the same things as me. I resonated with messages about the depths of pain that comes when the little one you love is removed from this life. I read of others, like me, who were marking time based upon the number of days since life had forever altered and child loss became a no-longer-unimaginable reality.
Does baby loss really happen in the days of modern medicine? It seems unreal from the outside. But oh, it does—with tears forming in my eyes for the too-numerous stories of women and families I now know, this loss still happens.
On October 15, we can flood the skies together with remembrance—or we can choose another way to remember (i.e. lit candles, a family ice cream outing, a donation made, etc.). And we can look on social media using the hashtag #HopeMommiesOct15 and see that we are not alone as we read Hope Mom and Hope Family posts from around the country.
For as long as the Lord gives me ability on this earth, I will remember my first daughter who is no longer here as a mother who has been entrusted with this life of one I love.
On October 15, we remember—and we mark out this day to say that we will always remember, as long as the Lord gives us ability. It’s a statement all the more supported by knowing that we help each other remember.
I might have been worried when grief was still new that I would somehow be forced by time or new experiences to lose some of my love or remembrance of my first daughter. But I had no reason to be concerned. Love remains, and she is part of our family. And Hope Mommies, through its purpose to bring Christian hope to bereaved mothers, comes alongside and remembers with me too.
When Hope Mommies is involved, I get to be known as, “Hope Mom to Noelle”—and you, Hope Mom to yours.
“My soul melts away for sorrow; strengthen me according to Your word!”
Ps. 119:28
Why? Why would the word of God, the Bible, be my strength? There, I meet the Word, who is Jesus. I see Him throughout the Bible:
- In the beginning, the Word created the heavens and the earth (John 1:1).
- In the fullness of time, the Word became flesh to save (John 1:14; Gal. 4:4-5).
- In the end, the Word will come as the evil- and death-conquering King (Rev. 19:12-13).
Perhaps it helps to think of Jesus being the Word because He is the proclamation and revelation of God to us (Hebrews 1:1-4). When I come to Him, I know I am coming to the authority I can trust.
In Psalm 119:28, the writer is praying, “God, my sorrow feels impossible—it’s like my soul is melting away. I can hardly describe it. Take Your truth and set it on high in my heart to be my place of rest and my foundation for steps forward.”
And believing sisters, it’s as if the Word says to us, “I created you, I saved you, I own you, and just as surely, I am coming for you.” Hope. Take strength. As many balloons travel upward on October 15 in remembrance together of our children, hope too in the Word coming downward in the skies for us, so soon.
Let’s flood the skies on October 15 with a myriad of colors, and encourage Hope Families by saying, “You are not alone. We remember your babies.”
