In the Word: The Lord, My Provider
Welcome to Hope Mommies’ In the Word devotionals. Over the next several weeks, we will be looking at different names of God found in Scripture, and how these different aspects of who He is offer us hope in the midst of our grief. As we study together, we encourage you to use the comments as a place to dialogue with us about what you are learning and share your answers to the questions below. We pray that you hearts will be encouraged as you study these names of God along with us!
“And my God will supply every need of yours according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus.”
Philippians 4:19
READ:
When my daughter died, I felt suffocated by sorrow. The world felt like a much darker place, and I couldn’t see a way out of my sadness. But my God refused to leave me alone in my grief. He poured His Word into my heart and His people into my path. God ushered in peace, joy, and hope—things I desperately needed and things only He, My Provider, could give.
We can often look to other things or other people, besides God, for our provision. We bury ourselves in our work, thinking that busyness will distract us from the pain. We expect our spouse to make us feel better and resent them when they can’t. We place our hope in conceiving another child and become bitter each month that doesn’t happen. We forget that our Maker is the only One Who can truly give us what we need.
God longs for you to come to Him with your sorrow, your dreams, your anger, your worries, your frustration, and all your hurt. He promises to provide you with the peace your soul so desperately needs and desires. The peace that only He can supply.
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”
Matthew 11:28
REFLECT:
- In what ways have you seen God’s provision in your grief?
- How have you been seeking fulfillment in something or someone other than God?
JOURNAL:
Read Psalm 91. Write down which phrases or verses minister the most to you right now and why. Are there any changes you need to make?
