In the Word: Shaped By His Promises

Welcome to Hope Mommies’ In the Word devotionals. It is our desire that this series will aid you in getting in the Bible for yourself and discovering the joy that comes from hearing from God through the pages of His Word.

“Who then is the faithful and wise servant, whom his master has set over his household, to give them their food at the proper time? Blessed is that servant whom his master will find so doing when he comes. Truly, I say to you, he will set him over all his possessions. But if that wicked servant says to himself, ‘My master is delayed,’ and begins to beat his fellow servants and eats and drinks with drunkards, the master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he does not know and will cut him in pieces and put him with the hypocrites. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth,” (Matthew 24:45-51).

Jesus says that this perspective shapes our actions rightly. Our grief is shaped by His promises. Our grief itself is something entrusted to us. It is something through which to suffer, cry, lean on others, and ultimately depend upon God.  Through the tears, it is something to offer to the Lord saying, “Here is my grief, will You glorify Yourself in this?” And as we are faithful to His calling upon us to trust Him about His purposes for our lives and timing for the fulfillment of His promises, our actions inevitably and rightly follow. We hear the words of encouragement from Jesus echo in our joyous hearts: “Blessed is that servant whom his master will find so doing when he comes.”

Yet, how exactly are our perspectives and actions shaped by His promises when some days, the best we can do is cry and miss our babies? Some days, the sovereign plan of God for us is to pour out our tears before Him. Some days, that is the very best we can do as people facing this tremendous sorrow.  I want to speak to those days now. Those days are hallowed. They hold our tears over our babies, tears precious to God (Psalm 56:8). They also hold the expectation of our hope as our hope is made to feel all the more dear to us because of our tears.

Each tear-filled day is hallowed. Waiting upon Him, who could appear at any moment, is hallowed.

Each day could be the one of the culmination of His promises and our longings. Let’s look to the skies: watching, trusting, knowing His timing is perfect, and “waiting for our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ,” (Titus 2:13).

Maranatha! Come, Lord Jesus!
