I AM: Faithful

“For the word of the Lord is upright, and all His work is done in faithfulness.”
-Psalm 33:4

Did you catch that?  ALL of His work — everything God does — is done in faithfulness.  Every plan He has made, every purpose for your life, every move He makes in this universe fulfills what He has said He will do for His people, because God is faithful.  Even when we are unfaithful to God, His own faithfulness is unchanged.  It’s everywhere, boundless and unending.

“If we are faithless, He remains faithful— for He cannot deny Himself.”
-2 Timothy 2:13

He is faithful to His Word
He is faithful to His name
He is faithful to His character
He is faithful to His promises
He is faithful to His people

It is sure. Rock solid. Build your hope, your trust, your life on this truth.  God has been faithful from the beginning of time, He is faithful today, and He will remain faithful for eternity, because He cannot deny Himself.

God’s faithfulness is a practical outpouring of His love. It’s His love tasted and seen in our lives and in our world. It’s an expression of His love to fulfill His promises for our good and His glory. God’s faithfulness and His steadfast love are closely intertwined all throughout Scripture:

“The word of the L??? is upright,
and all His work is done in faithfulness.
He loves righteousness and justice;
the earth is full of the steadfast love of the L???.”
-Psalm 33:4–5

“Your steadfast love, O LORD, extends to the heavens,
Your
faithfulness to the clouds.”
-Psalm 36:5

“But you, O Lord, are a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness.”
-Psalm 86:15

“For great is His steadfast love toward us, and the faithfulness of the LORD endures forever. Praise the LORD!”
-Psalm 117:2

“The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases;
His mercies never come to an end;
they are new every morning;
great is Your faithfulness.”
-Lamentations 3:22-23

Go back through those verses and pay attention to how God’s faithfulness is described:

-Includes all His work
-Extends to the clouds
-Abounding
-Enduring forever
-Great

Is your heart encouraged yet?  God’s faithfulness knows no bounds!

God’s steadfast love and mercies for you are new EVERY morning. In fact, they are new with every new moment of your life.  He is committed to you in every moment to keep His great faithfulness toward you.  He is faithful during loss.  He is faithful in the midst of darkness and grief.  He is faithful in all things.

Will you savor the gift of each new moment, whatever it may bring, knowing that The One who makes all things new is working all things together for your eternal good.  In every moment God determines to be altogether faithful to His purposes, promises, and character. In every new moment God is devoted to fulfill what He says He will do.

“Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering,
for He who promised is faithful.
-Hebrews 10:23

Are you familiar with the story of Sarah and Abraham? (Gen. 17, 21) God promised Abraham a great legacy of a nation countless in number through the birth of a son.  But for 90 years, Sarah had not been able to conceive.  Can you imagine the pain and discouragement?  90 years of waiting, hoping, longing.  Finally, when Sarah was 90 years old, God promised her that she would become pregnant.  He even went as far as to say that she would bear a son by that time next year.  She laughed at the thought.

Me?  Pregnant at 90?  After I am worn out and my husband is old?  That’s ridiculous!

But God responded to her by asking a question:

“Is anything too hard for the LORD?”
-Genesis 18:14

We don’t always get to see the whole picture.  Instead, we must choose to trust the Lord knowing that each day His faithfulness is guaranteed.   Nothing is too hard for Him to accomplish.

There will be days when we are faced with strong fears, doubts, and insecurities.  On those days, we have to fight to remember God’s faithfulness.  Recount all the ways He has been faithful to you in the past, and secure yourself in the truth that you can count on Him to be faithful again.

His faithfulness doesn’t mean that all things will turn out as you desire them to. It doesn’t mean every prayer will be answered how you want them to be.  It doesn’t mean that everything that happens will be as you planned.  But it does mean that in God’s steadfast love and goodness, He will work all things together as He knows will be for your ultimate good (Romans 8:28)

All those years ago, when God first promised Abraham that He would have a son, He asked Abraham to prepare a cow, goat, and ram in preparation for a blood covenant with him. (Genesis 15) Abraham was to slaughter the animals and divide their bodies on opposite sides of the ground from each other in order to make a path down the middle.  Typically, when a blood covenant was performed, both parties involved would walk through the slaughtered animals as a way of saying, “May this be done to me if I do not keep my promise.”  (Jeremiah 34:18,19)  When the time came for the covenant to be sealed, Abraham fell asleep, and God passed through the animals on His own.  He assumed the full weight of the covenant.  Nothing depended on Abraham. Everything depended on God.  This was such a profound symbol of the depth of God’s faithfulness.

We may know that God will keep His promises, but every day that passes as we walk through sorrow or loss seems to dislodge our foothold on that trust.  But dear one, God answered those doubts and fears in a covenant far more profound than the one He made with Abraham.  In His covenant with us, He went as far as sending His own Son to be the sacrifice for us.  There is nothing that He won’t endure in order for His faithfulness to prevail.

When you find yourself wearied and frail in the storms of life, remember this great covenant. Let your heart be held fast by this tremendous expression of His great faithfulness to you.  God gave His Son for you.  Jesus endured the pain and shame of the cross for you.  You never have to wonder if He will come through for you.  Rest confident and assured that He will keep His promises.  He will be true to His Word, because “all His work is done in faithfulness.”
