A Prayer for the One Who Is Weary

The loss of a child is a heavy burden filled with so much complexity. The multifaceted intersections of grief often fill us with a weariness that is felt in the deepest recesses of our souls—emotional, spiritual, mental, and physical weariness. No part of us is left untouched.

Maybe today, the weariness in you is manifested in a struggle to get out of bed or perform simple tasks around the house. Perhaps you are experiencing a mental fog that leaves you hardly able to focus on anything. You might find yourself opening up your Bible to spend time with the Lord, only to wonder if you even have the energy to engage with Scripture because, in this moment, God feels so distant.

But regardless of what weariness looks like for you right now, Jesus steps into the midst of it with a powerful promise:

“Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light. (Matthew 11:28-30)

Jesus’ promise doesn’t include a carefully curated program to regain emotional energy. He doesn’t give us “Six Ways to Sharpen your Focus,” or a 10-step plan for getting more sleep. Instead, He issues a simple invitation:

Come.

Christ’s easy yoke—the yoke of believing, abiding, and trusting in Him—is offered in exchange of the heavy yoke of our sin. Jesus himself is the solution for all that burdens our hearts. When we come to Him in faith that He is who He says He is, and that He can do what He says He can do, our souls find rest. Rest and hope. Hope in the truth that the Promised One will come through for us.

For God alone, O my soul, wait in silence,

for my hope is from him.

He only is my rock and my salvation,

my fortress; I shall not be shaken.

On God rests my salvation and my glory;

my mighty rock, my refuge is God. (Psalm 62:5-7)

God alone is our solace. In Him only we find rest for our weary hearts. Do not lose heart. Your hope is stronger than the despair that threatens you. Dear sister, we serve a risen Savior; He has overcome.

Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus
O soul are you weary and troubledNo light in the darkness you seeThere’s light for a look at the SaviorAnd life more abundant and free
Turn your eyes upon JesusLook full in his wonderful faceAnd the things of earth will grow strangely dimIn the light of his glory and grace
His word shall not fail you he promisedBelieve him and all will be wellThen go to a world that is dyingHis perfect salvation to tell
Turn your eyes upon JesusLook full in his wonderful faceAnd the things of earth will grow strangely dimIn the light of his glory and grace
