In the Word: Even Though

Welcome to Hope Mommies’ In the Word devotionals. Over the next several weeks, we will be studying the book of Habakkuk together. In this book, we gain insight into how God is at work on our behalf even when we can’t always see it. Join us in the weeks ahead as we discover the God who is who carefully and lovingly crafted you, and lovingly created the gift of your child for which you now long. He has not carried you thus far simply to leave you on your own, but will be your Guide and your Strength.

 Even Though

“Even though the fig trees have no blossoms, and there are no grapes on the vines; even though the olive crop fails, and the fields lie empty and barren; even though the flocks die in the fields, and the cattle barns are empty, yet I will rejoice in the Lord!  I will be joyful in the God of my salvation! The Sovereign Lord is my strength! He makes me as surefooted as a deer, able to tread upon the heights.” Habakkuk 3:17-19 (NLT)

Habakkuk’s complaints quiet to a prayer, and he pleads with God to respond to the deep need around him as He had in the past. His prayer continues and he recalls God’s goodness, justice, and righteousness. As Habakkuk meditates on God’s covenant faithfulness—it cannot be broken, for God never lies—it leads him to a great expression of faith and trust: Even though. Even though there is emptiness and lack; even though there is death and sorrow, yet I will rejoice in the Lord. Not in the current circumstances. Not pretending that everything is fine (because it isn’t.) Not rejoicing in the hope of the healing, but in the Healer. He rejoices in the Lord.  God will be his strength. God will enable him to climb higher above his grief and to see more of God’s own purposes. God will be enough. Read these verses about God’s sufficiency for our good: “I say to the Lord, ‘You are my Lord; I have no good apart from you.’” Psalm 16:2 “My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.” Psalm 73:26 “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” Matthew 11:28 “I love you, O Lord, my strength. The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer, my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.” Psalm 18:1-2 “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.” John 10:10 Precious Hope Mom, I pray that as you reflect on God’s faithfulness in your life, you will be armed with courage to rejoice in the Lord. He is faithful and true. In Him, your brokenness will be made whole. I pray that like Habakkuk, you will be able to say “even though,” and walk in the truth that God is your strength. You are so very loved.
