Two Books for Hope Dads

Today, we wanted to share with you two books, written by fathers who have experienced the loss of a child, which might be meaningful and encouraging to you as Hope Dads.

In August of 2006, Luke Veldt endured the sudden and unexpected death of his thirteen year-old daughter, Allison. After Allison’s death, Veldt dove into Psalm 103, reading through it every day for more than a year. Written In Tears describes Veldt’s journey through this Psalm, and how he experienced God’s presence and love in the midst of his grief. This book is filled with reminders of God’s faithfulness and teaches the griever to call upon the Lord in their suffering. Veldt writes in such a way as to invite the reader to walk with him in his grief, giving them a front row seat to witness the lessons that the Lord taught him along the way. Whether you are grieving the loss of a child, or seeking to comfort someone who has, this book will serve as a testament that God remains steadfast through our joys and sorrows.

After the death of his three-year-old son, Cameron Cole clung to Christ in the midst of his grief, meditating on biblical truth. As he weaves together his story and faith with a theology of suffering, Cole shares twelve pivotal truths to carry the reader through various stages of grief, what he calls The Initial Shock, The New Normal, and The Long Haul, in order to draw our hearts to our most essential need in the face of tragedy and suffering—the hope of Christ. Cole tackles the hard questions of grief without being trite, and continually points the reader to the truth of Scripture and the character of God as our anchor in the storm. His testimony provides a powerful witness to the unwavering hope we have been given through the death and resurrection of Christ.

As Father’s Day approaches, we would love to hear from you, Hope Dads. What resources have been helpful for you as you have navigated the heartache of grief and loss? We would love to hear how God has been encouraging your heart in the midst of your grief.
