My Song in the Night

Welcome to Hope Mommies In the Word devotionals. Over the next few weeks, we will be meditating on Psalm 77 together. As we study these truths together, we’d love you to use the comments as a place to dialogue with us about what you are learning and share your answers to the questions below. We pray that you hearts will be encouraged as you dig into God’s Word each week with us!

“I consider the days of old, the years long ago.” Psalm 77:5

READ:

“Yesterday everything was perfect, everything was fine…” The abruptness of trauma can leave us reeling. There becomes a “before” and “after”; a version of your life that has ceased. You have endured the death of your beloved child, yes. But to add to that loss is many smaller “deaths” as your relationships, family, friends, home, and your own body changes. Everything is forced to adapt to the loss, and that adds layers upon layers to the grief. The psalmist reflects on this as he writes: I consider the days of old, the years long ago. I said, “Let me remember my song in the night; let me meditate in my heart.” As the psalmist reflects on his “before” moments, he is also calling to mind those times of prayer and worship when he had rejoiced in the Lord – when his song in the night was a praise, not a lament. Will you choose to call to mind those times of praise in your life? Will you take time to reflect on the “years long ago” and remember the Lord’s goodness to you throughout your life?

REFLECT:
  • What was the moment (or multiple moments) when everything changed?
  • What is one of the “before” aspects that you lament the most?
  • As you reflect on your relationship to God before your loss, what emotions and thoughts does that evoke?
