In the Word: The Horn of My Salvation

Welcome to Hope Mommies’ In the Word devotionals. Over the next several weeks, we will be studying Psalm 18:1-2 together. Psalm 18 was penned by David after God had delivered Him from the hands of his enemies, and is rich with metaphors describing the nature and character of God. In this series, we will be looking at how each of these attributes affords us a greater picture of God’s care for His children, and how knowing and believing these truths can bring comfort to our hearts in the midst of grief. As we study together, we encourage you to use the comments as a place to dialogue with us about what you are learning and share your answers to the questions below. We pray that you hearts will be encouraged as you study these names of God along with us!

THE HORN OF MY SALVATION

“I love you, O Lord, my strength. The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer, my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.”
Psalm 18:1-2

“Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, for He has visited and redeemed His people and has raised up a horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David.”
Luke 1:68-69

READ:

I felt the sun on my eyelids and knew it was time to wake up for another day. I took a deep breath and prayed that the Lord would sustain me once again as I fought the daily battle that comes with the loss of a child. During the days and months that followed the birth and subsequent passing of Isaac, each moment felt like I was in the middle of a war. I was fighting to find joy again. Fighting for that “new normal” that I heard others speak of, but wasn’t sure even existed. Fighting back constant tears. Fighting to be the wife that I knew my husband needed. Fighting to be present for my toddler daughter that just wanted her mommy. Fighting simply to take my next breath and to put one foot in front of the other. There were moments when I would cry out to God, “I just can’t do this anymore!”

I have to believe this is how David felt when he was trying to escape Saul and his army. He felt weak and unable to fight the battle on his own. He wondered if he could go on for another minute, much less another day. David needed someone to fight for him. He needed a Savior.

In the Bible, the mention of a “horn” was often just that, a horn of an animal, usually an ox. It was a strong and fierce weapon. When David says in Psalm 19:2 that God was the horn of his salvation, he was declaring that it was God who had won the war. It was God that fought his battle. It was God that delivered David from his enemies.

Just like God fought for David, He did and continues to do the same for me. I believe that He will do this for you as well. On those days when we cry out, “God, I just can’t do this anymore.” He reminds me us that we can’t, but He can. In those moments when everything feels hopeless and dark, God reminds us that He sent Jesus for that very reason: to be our hope, the light in the darkness, and the ultimate horn of our salvation. I pray, dear mommy, that you can rest in this truth today.

“In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.”
John 1:4-5

REFLECT:
  1. What steps do you need to take in order to remain rooted in God as the horn of your salvation?
  2. How have you seen God as the horn of your salvation in the midst of your grief?
JOURNAL:

As a grieving mother sometimes we find ourselves trying to fight our battles on our own. We forget that God desires to be the horn of salvation for us. Spend some time praying and journaling about some battles that you can turn over to the Lord, allow Him to fight for you.

Beautiful devotion. Thanks for the encouragement. And I pray you are healed. Remember – you will laugh again in honor of the name of your son, Issac.

Thank you for this. I have not experienced the loss of a child but this has helped me this morning. May the God of our salvation be exalted even in our low estate. May God bless you and your family mightily in Jesus’ name.
