In the Word: God is Compassionate
Welcome to Hope Mommies’ In the Word devotionals. Over the next several weeks, we will be looking at different characteristics of God—specifically reflecting on how each aspect of His character offers us hope in the midst of our grief. As we study together, we encourage you to use the comments as a place to dialogue with us about what you are learning and share your answers to the questions below. We pray that you hearts will be encouraged as you dig into the infinitely beautiful character of God along with us!
“He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.”
Psalm 147:3
READ:
There has never been a greater declaration of compassion than when God’s Son gave His life for the sins of the world on the cross. From the beginning of time, God knew that your sin would eternally separate you from His presence. But, out of His compassion and concern for you, He made a plan to redeem you by allowing His own Son to die in your place.
If this same God would choose to give His Son as a sacrifice for you while you were still His enemy (Romans 5:10), how much more will He show compassion towards you in the midst of your sorrow? Dear one, there will never be a place more warm with compassion, safety, and care than in the arms of God.
Though God often allows us to experience grief and affliction, He does not delight in it (Lamentations 3:32-33). He longs to offer you healing and hope in your brokenness, and is able to use every difficult circumstance in your life to conform you into a greater likeness of His Son.
Will you trust that your compassionate God will use even this great sorrow for your good and that He will be your comfort in the midst of it?
REFLECT:
1. In what ways have you experienced God’s compassion towards you in your grief?
2. How does the cross give us a greater understanding of God’s compassion?
JOURNAL:
Psalm 147:3 tells us that God binds up the wounds of the brokenhearted. What wounds are you bearing today? How can you entrust these wounds to the Lord for His healing and compassion?
