Welcome to Hope Mommies’ In the Word devotionals. Throughout this Advent season, we will be studying Galatians 4:4-5 together. In this series, we wil study the gospel truths found in these verses and discover how the coming of Christ speaks into our sorrow.

“But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons.”
Galatians 4:4-5

READ:

The Son of God came to this world for a purpose. He came to redeem His people. He came to regain what had been lost: us.

From that first time sin entered into the hearts of Adam and Eve, nothing has been right. We are living in a world that is crushed under the weight of sin, and if you are reading this, you have felt that weight. Experiencing death is not the way things are supposed to be. But, our sinfulness makes it necessary (Romans 6:23).

But our good Father, in all His love and mercy, did not just look and say, “Oh well, it was good while it lasted.” Instead, He sent His own Son to bring us back to Him! And this was not an easy task to accomplish. The word “redeem” means to regain by purchase. Jesus came to pay the price for our sin so that we can be made right with God.

“The wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Jesus Christ out Lord.”
Romans 6:23.

Jesus paid the price of death Himself. Let that truth sink in. Jesus bought our salvation with His own life. Does that not make your heart sing with joy and thankfulness? At this time of year, as we are reminded of Jesus’s first coming, let us also remember that He came with the great purpose to redeem us. He does not desire for us to remain in a world full of sin and death. He is making a new home for us—one that is perfect. And by sending His Son to redeem us, He has made a way for us to get there.

REFLECT:

What do the following verses teach us about our redemption?

  • Galatians 1:3-5
  • Isaiah 44:21-23
  • Acts 3:18-21
  • John 10:10
JOURNAL:

Take a minute to reflect on how Jesus has redeemed you and what He has redeemed you from. Write a prayer to Him, thanking Him for sending His Son to earth on your behalf.
