God is not outside this grief, He is with you in it.
There is something holy about grief. Not because it feels good or because we understand it—but because God meets us there.
We often feel pressure to move past our sorrow. To find the silver lining. To clean up our tears and point to hope before we’ve even had time to weep.
But the heart of our God is not one who rushes us past our pain.
He is not uncomfortable with our lament.
He is not impatient with our sadness.
God is not outside your grief.
He is not standing at a distance, waiting for you to “get over it.”
He is sitting with you in it.
Psalm 34:18 says, “The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.”
Not “The Lord fixes the brokenhearted” or “The Lord explains the pain away.”
No—He is near. He draws close.
Jesus doesn’t avoid sorrow.
He enters into it.
He weeps in it.
When Lazarus died, Jesus knew He was about to raise him from the dead. And yet, when He saw Mary’s tears—He wept too. (John 11:35)
He didn’t rebuke her sadness. He didn’t bypass the pain.
He stood beside her in her loss and cried.
That is who our Savior is.
So if you’re sitting in the weight of your grief today—if the silence is deafening, if the ache is fresh, if you can’t breathe under the heaviness of what’s been lost—you are not alone.
Jesus is not afraid of your sorrow.
He won’t hurry you through it.
He won’t minimize it.
He won’t say “at least.”
He will just sit beside you.
He will weep with you.
He will hold your broken heart in His hands and whisper, “I’m here.”
There will be a time for hope. There will be a time for joy. But maybe today is the day for lament.
And that’s okay.
Because even in the rawest parts of our sorrow—when all we can do is cry out or crumble—He is still Emmanuel.
God with us.
Come, Lord Jesus,
Jennie
