God Exists And Has Spoken To Us

“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.”
Genesis 1:1

READ:

What can we observe in this one sentence?

  1. There was a beginning.
  2. God was at the beginning.
  3. God is the Creator.

This is not an explanation of how God came to be. With this one sentence, the reality of God is established as fact. He existed before anything else existed, and He had the power and authority to create the heavens and earth. The truth that God exists is evidenced not only from what the Bible says, but also from the created world around us. In Psalm 19:1-4, it says,

“The heavens proclaim the glory of God.
The skies display His craftsmanship.
Day after day they continue to speak;
Night after night they make Him known.
They speak without a sound or word;
Their voice is never heard.
Yet their message has gone throughout the earth,
And their words to all the world.”

The fact that there is a natural world around us, full of things so detailed and complex that it makes foolish even the wisest of men, is evidence that God exists. Not only the world itself, but even you and I as created beings are evidence that God exists.

So did God create the world and then step back, allowing it to follow an undirected course of action? Thankfully no! Nothing, not even the deaths of our babies, is outside of His control. And everything that happens in our lives ultimately serves to proclaim His great name.

While the Bible makes it clear that God is so great that He can never be fully known, it also states that God invites us to know Him: “Let him who boasts boast in this, that He understands and knows me” (Jeremiah 9:24). We can know God by the evidence of His creation (Romans 1:18-20), but we can know Him more completely through reading and believing the Bible. So hold fast to His Word. Press in to know this God who is our Creator and who, even now, cares for your precious baby. He is worthy of being known, and He has spoken to us.

“So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.”
Romans 10:17

STUDY:
  1. What do the following verses teach us about knowing God?
    Psalm 139:4-6
    Psalm 145:3-5
    2 Peter 3:18
    John 17:3
    Philippians 3:10
  2. How does our ability to know God and be known by Him bring comfort amidst our sorrow?
  3. How has God, through His Word, spoken to your heart in the midst of your grief?
JOURNAL:

Spend some time reading through some of the Psalms. What can you learn about God through these chapters of the Bible? How does this knowledge of God strengthen your faith and anchor your heart to hope?
